 The year dawns with a curious mix of hope and apprehension. Hope that better days are ahead, apprehension that the hangover from the ‘great recession’ will linger through 2012.

There is good reason to be cautious looking forward. Europe is still in turmoil and growth is stubbornly slow south of the border. While the economy experienced a significant bounceback in 2010 from the depths of the recession in 2009, that recovery softened early last year, leading economists to roll back GDP forecasts for this year. Consumer confidence remains low, adding to a general economic malaise. 

But reason for optimism abounds, and much it is tied to Canada’s economic fundamentals that helped us weather the storm better than others.

Vacancy rates, for instance, are much healthier here than in the U.S., and by the end of the year, according to reports, we should have a vacancy rate even lower than the current rate.

New beginnings and opportunities present themselves. In Barrie, we welcome a new CAO while the City’s strategy to renew brownfield sites could spark construction activity.
